El 30 de marzo, debía cumplir años Arsenio Pastor Erico, el más grande jugador paraguayo de todos los tiempos y uno de los mejores del mundo. Ídolo indiscutible del Independiente de Argentina, el club Nacional y de cualquiera que ame al fútbol, Erico logró cautivar a todos con su fútbol.
Es fascinante ver los archivos acerca de lo que dejó Erico en el vecino país, la admiración y el respeto casi unánime de los hinchas que gustan del fútbol. Con 293 goles oficiales, Erico sigue siendo el máximo goleador histórico del fútbol argentino. Claro que, hubo un grupo de estadísticos que «arregló» -un par de años atrás- los números, y dio un par de goles a Angel Labruna, eterno ídolo de River, con lo que pudo igualar a Erico en la cúspide. Pero allá ellos.
Lo cierto y concreto de Erico es que se ganó el cariño de todos. El periodista Aldo Proietto, ex director de la Revista El Gráfico y entonces columnista de la revista «Goles» de Argentina, escribió, el día de la muerte de Erico, lo siguiente: «No tuve la suerte de verlo jugar. Tuve, en cambio, la suerte de compartir con él largas charlas en su cafetería de Ramos Mejía. No tuve la suerte de verlo jugar, como estoy seguro tampoco tuvo ese joven hincha de Independiente que lo lloraba hace apenas unas horas. Pero estoy seguro que lo vio jugar ese señor de la Platea, porque vi sus lágrimas y sus canas… «. Los goles de Erico solían presidir inolvidables tertulias futboleras en las que se discutía todo, menos la clase incomparable, acaso insustituible, de este paraguayo mágico».
En el distante 1937 hizo 47 goles con tan solo 34 fechas. Obviamente esta cifra sigue sin ser igualada en el fútbol argentino. Tipo humilde, supo hacer de su casa el hogar de todos los paraguayos que iban a Buenos Aires. La mayoría de ellos, por exilio político o económico. Lo cuenta Roque Meza, en su libro «Arsenio Erico, el paraguayo de oro». Meza es, quizás, quien hizo el trabajo más detallado acerca de la vida de Erico.
Ya retirado y distanciado del mundo fútbol, en su casa de Buenos Aires, Erico empezó a fomentar una faceta poco conocida; fue su afición por la lectura y la buena música. De hecho, su casa en la capital de Buenos Aires fue el lugar preferido de José Asunción Flores, Elvio Romero y tiempo después del mismo Augusto Roa Bastos para hablar de la vida; eso sí, nada de fútbol ni de política.
A Erico le gustaba, más que nada, la novela del tipo policial. Su libro de cabecera fue «La bestia debe morir», de Nicholas Blake. Leyó, antes de convertirse en amigos, las obras de Roa Bastos y era un devorador de los diarios, además de las revistas y cuentos. En una de sus últimas entrevistas, Erico confesó igualmente su frustración por la transformación que iba tomando el fútbol, principalmente por todo lo que le iba rodeando. Tuvo, a principios de los 70, un breve paso como entrenador en el fútbol paraguayo, pero Erico no sentía esa función.
«No entiendo por qué ahora los jugadores entrenan como atletas de competencia. El fútbol se juega corriendo, pero corriendo no se juega.» fue una de sus frases que dejó cuando le preguntaron cómo veía el fútbol. Corría la mitad de la década del 70.
Nacional, su club de origen, decidió como homenaje denominar «Arsenio Erico» a su estadio ubicado en Barrio Obrero, y el 25 de febrero de 2010, el gobierno paraguayo trajo los restos de Erico al Paraguay. El club Independiente, que inauguró su nuevo estadio hace un par de años, le dio la preferencia central.
Sin embargo, hay hinchas de Independiente que hoy buscan ofender a sus rivales tratándolos de paraguayos. Pero como dice Eduardo Sacheri, escritor e hincha fanático del Rojo; «Eso sí, supongo que al gran Erico le habría molestado que algunos hinchas de Independiente, hoy en día, usen la palabra paraguayo cuando quieren insultar a alguien. Paciencia: que si el género humano algo tiene en abundancia, son los imbéciles. Los goleadores no sobran, pero los imbéciles abundan.»
El día que Murió Erico, (23 de julio 1977), el periodista argentino, Héctor Negro, escribió para el Gráfico:
